Game metadata

Rule sets

Boiler Plate

No balls back, no island, no extra cup for bounce, no blowing/fingering, no reracks, and cups are removed as they are hit. Overtime only happens on equal numbers of shots. If the second-shooting team sinks the last cup, the game is over. If the first-shooting team wins on their first shot of the turn, the other team must also finish on their first shot to force overtime.

House

Rules were not specified or were decided locally by the players, host, or location.

Tor

Balls back, one island call per team, one rerack per team, and bounce hits count as two cups with the defending team choosing the additional cup. Hit cups stay in place, marked dead, until the turn ends. Turn-parity rebuttal applies; redemption does not.

Custom

Mixed or unusual rules. Use rule tags and Notes for details.

Optional tags

Rule tags

Balls Back

If both shots in a turn are made, the team gets another two shots, including in 1v1. If both land in the same cup, only that one cup is removed. Dead cups are cleared before the extra shots begin.

Balls Back+

If both shots land in the same cup, it counts as two cups: the defending team chooses one additional cup, and the shooting team also receives Balls Back.

Island

Each team may call island once, before a shot. Only the called isolated cup can score: hitting any other cup counts as a miss and leaves it alive. A successful call kills the island plus one additional cup chosen by the defending team.

Redemption

If the team who started first loses, they get one extra turn to finish their cups and force overtime. This is different from standard rebuttal: if the first team finishes cups first, the second team still plays their turn and can force overtime.

Bounce

A bounce shot off the table may be deflected by the defending team. If made, it counts as two cups and the defending team chooses the additional cup. It still counts as a hit for Balls Back.

1 Re-rack

Each team gets one rerack, requested before either player shoots in that team's turn. There is no remaining-cup restriction.

Blowing/Fingering

The ball may be blown or fingered out of a cup before it is fully in the water or beer, depending on house convention.

Heating Up/Fire

If a player hits two shots in a row, they may call "heating up". If they hit a third shot in three consecutive turns, that player alone keeps shooting in that turn until they miss.

Elbows, wrists, and overtime

Elbow or wrist enforcement and overtime conventions are decided by the teams unless a specific house rule says otherwise.

Endgame conventions

Rebuttal and overtime

Shot-parity rebuttal

The teams receive an equal total number of shots. If the first-finishing team has taken more shots, the other team receives exactly enough shots to reach parity and force overtime by clearing its rack.

Turn-parity rebuttal (default)

The teams receive an equal number of full turns. The responding team receives both shots in its final turn, and any Balls Back earned during that turn is played normally.

Redemption

If the team that originally started loses after shot or turn parity has already been reached, it receives one extra turn to clear its remaining cups and force overtime.

Tied finish

The teams may record a draw, continue into an untracked overtime, or rack three cups per side for tracked overtime. Tracked overtime keeps the same rules and original starting team.
